Meet the faces behind HMU

Lehlohonolo ‘Hloni’ Ntlatlapo

HMU Portfolio: President / Chairperson

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Katlehong, attended school at Phumulani School in Katlehong.

“As someone who grew up & went to a school in a township, I had the first hand experience of  how access to information on higher education & applying is an issue for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds. I’m a person who believes in not forgetting where you come from; move a few steps forward, then look back to encourage others to join the journey.”

Carol Naidoo

HMU Portfolio: Deputy President (Head of HMU Pietermaritzburg) / Deputy Chairperson

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Pietermaritzburg and attended Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.

“I spent the first few months of my life in Ekujabuleni Children’s home in Edendale, before being adopted by an amazing family. I hope this initiative can help all children from disadvantaged backgrounds, including those from my first home Ekujabuleni, to reach for the stars & to have all their dreams ralised.”

Lerato Dingaan

HMU Portfolio: Deputy President (Head of HMU Cape Town)

Occupation: Law Student

Background: From Katlehong, relocated to Mamelodi in 2014. Attended school at Phumulani and Pretoria Secondary Schools.

“I realised that I was fortunate to have informed & supportive siblings. Without their support I never would have been able to apply to & make it to varsity. Unfortunately, not many of my peers had this support & thus they were unable to further their studies. Being part of HMU is my way of contributing towards changing this harsh reality.”

Efosa Ohonba

HMU Portfolio: Secretary general

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Johannesburg and went to King Edward VII Schiil in Johannesburg.

“I wanted to be part of something that does more to improve the lives & advance the interests of other people other than myself. As you go along in life you realise that no one can achieve any great feat on their own, we all need some help along the way.”

Welile ‘Weli’ Mavundla

HMU Portfolio: Finance officer

Occupation: 2nd year Chartered Accountant (CA) Trainee

Background: From Pietermaritzburg, attended Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School.

“There is a niche in our environment that needed to be fulfilled & more often than not, learners, of rural communities & most townships don’t apply in time which consequently creates the long lines at the beginning of a new year after matric results have been released.”

Bonginkosi ‘Bk’ Mnguni

HMU Portfolio: Public Relations Officer

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Impumelelo, attended school at Zikhethele Secondary School in Impumelelo.

“Drawing from my own experience where fresh out of high school, I almost gave up on my lifelong dream of being a doctor due to lack of access to information and resources being far from optimal. Being part of HMU enables me to play my part in ensuring that more students from disadvantaged backgrounds know what opportunities lie ahead of them instead of giving up on their dreams.”

Ilmondo Allies

HMU Portfolio: Projects Manager

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Upington, relocated to Cape Town in 2011, and attended Upington and De Kuilen High Schools.

“I’m from a small town where only those who had the privilege of attending a Model C school or whose parents could afford were able to study post-matric. I can’t help but think that many people I went to school with who started working immediately after matric, had there been an organisation like HMU they might have followed a different course.”

Ziyabukwa ‘Ziya’ Mayalo

HMU Portfolio: Projects Manager

Occupation: Medical student

Background: From Grahamstown, attended high school at Kingswood College.

“Raised by 2 teachers I have always had a passion for education & it was instilled in me that education is the key that opens many doors in life. I believe that everyone deserves a chance at attaining this key, & I have seen that higher education is not easy for all to attain despite ones matric results.”

Lwazi Mpuku

HMU Portfolio: Research officer

Occupation: Medical Doctor

Background: From Mthatha, went to Mthatha High School.

“Coming from a predominantly rural community I’ve seen the gaps that most of the students from my community have, especially when it comes to continuing with education and life after matric.”

Achuma Fihla

HMU Portfolio: Research officer

Occupation: Audiologist (Masters in Epidemiology & Biostatisctics)

Background: From Dimbaza (Eastern Cape), attended Kingsridge High School for girls

“Being a fresh matriculant, I was not aware of different scholarship and bursary opportunities that were available for me. My drive is to not allow other matriculants to go through what I went through in my 1st year of my studies, as my parents went through a lot of emotional & financial strain to put me through my 1st year of studies.”
